Or are you? Should you get lash extensions?
Getting lash extensions is a good choice if you want long-lasting, customizable, dramatic results like extra lash length, fullness, definition, and curl.
Getting more and more excited at the possibility of your very own extensions? Thought so! But maybe you’re still unsure if they’re right for you. I’ve been lashing (and rocking extensions) for more than a decade, so I know their perks and pitfalls.
Scroll on for all the info you’ll need to make a well-informed pros-and-cons list to help you decide if you are a good candidate for eyelash extensions.
Are Lash Extensions Right For You?
Let’s start by glancing at the main why you should get extensions and why you shouldn’t (I chose 4 of each to keep things balanced and fair):
|Why You Should Get Lash Extensions||Why You Shouldn’t Get Lash Extensions|
|Long-lasting results – go to sleep and wake up with your dream lashes.||Aftercare needed to keep them longer.|
|No need for mascara and lash curlers.||A time-consuming and pricy procedure.|
|Get a customized lash look to enhance your unique eye shape.||They can trigger bad reactions in people with skin or eye conditions or a history of allergies.|
|Create major lash impact without the hassle and damage from false lashes.||They can damage natural lashes if not applied by an experienced pro lash tech.|
How about we look deeper at the reasons to get lash extensions and the reasons to think twice before getting them?
Why You Should Get Lash Extensions
These are the top 5 reasons to boost your lashes with extensions:
#1: You Want Big Results
Lash extensions give you that satisfying before-and-after transformation you’re after.
Your lashes will get extra length, volume, curl, and definition. A full makeover.
#2: You Want a Customized Lash Look
Your extensions are made just for you. Choose the style, curl, length, and thickness that makes the most of your unique eye and face shape. You can even pick your extensions’ color, from the usual black to playful shades like yellow or blue.
You can also switch up your look by experimenting with different extension styles and colors when you want something new.
#3: You Want Long-Lasting Results
You’ll wake up with your ultimate lashes every day for 2 to 4 weeks (even longer if you’re lucky!).
How long your extensions last depends on how much love you show them and how fast your natural lashes grow. Most of my clients get refills every 3 weeks.
#4: You Want Falsies’ Benefits Without the Downsides
With extensions, you get the va-va-voom of falsies without the hassle and damage of needing to apply and remove them every day.
Plus, you can swim and shower with extensions (4 hours after they’re applied) without worrying they’ll fall off, unlike strip and magnetic falsies!

#5: You Want to Save Time Getting Ready
After getting extensions, you can finally ditch your eye makeup, saving yourself a few precious minutes every morning.
You’ll likely also make your morning routine less stressful – forget trying to layer on mascara to create enough volume without creating clumpy lashes and smudgy eyelids.
Good to know! You’re free to wear extension-friendly makeup if you want to.
Why You Shouldn’t Get Lash Extensions
These are the top 5 reasons extensions might not be for you:
#1: You Can’t Commit to Aftercare
You must follow simple aftercare rules to keep your extensions in good condition and stuck fast.
You shouldn’t need to make drastic changes to your lifestyle to care for your extensions. Still, if you don’t see yourself cleaning and brushing your extensions daily, giving up sleeping on your stomach, and going without your oil-based eye products, you could trigger an eye infection and make your extensions fall out too soon.
#2: You Don’t Want to Add Anything to Your Natural Lashes
Suppose you’d like to enhance your natural lashes. In this case, you might prefer a lash lift to extensions. But be aware that a lash lift can’t lengthen your lashes or add fullness to your lash line.
See my guide to lash lifts vs extensions to help you decide which procedure will work for you.
#3: You’ve Got a Skinny Beauty Budget and Little Time
At about $164 for an initial application of classic lashes, extensions need a healthy beauty budget.
They also need a good few hours of free time. Applying a full set of classic extensions takes between 90 and 120 minutes.
If you’re short on cash and time, you might want to go for a more affordable and quicker lash lift than extensions.
#4: You Want to Try DIY
Thinking of giving DIY extensions a go? Don’t do it!
Too much can go wrong when you take your extensions into your own hands. I’m talking about eye injuries, damage to natural lashes, and unflattering results.
Plus, don’t risk your lash and eye health by having your extensions applied by someone inexperienced and unqualified – even if they give you a huge discount.
#5: You Have a High Risk of a Bad Reaction
Some people are more likely to react badly to extensions than others.
Get your doctor’s OK before getting extensions if you have eye, skin, or hair sensitivities or conditions, like dermatitis, alopecia areata, or inflamed eyelids. Also, chat with your doctor before going ahead with extensions if you’ve had an allergic reaction. And put extensions on hold if you’re about to have eye surgery or treatments like chemotherapy or radiation.
