I’ve been using mascara for years but when I first tried a lash serum, I wasn’t quite sure if they could work together – was I supposed to simply put mascara over lash serum?
It turns out, there are a few things to watch out for that I wanted to cover in this article.
Let’s dive in!

Can You Put Lash Serum on Before Mascara?
Yes, a lash serum can be applied to the eyelashes before mascara. It’s important to wait at least 5 minutes between both applications so that the eyelash serum can dry and be fully absorbed. That way, it won’t interact with the mascara.
In my case, the 5-minute waiting period was a little annoying at first but I just rearranged by morning beauty routine so that I could use that time to do another part of my face and maximize my time.
Once I had done this a few times, I got used to the new routine and it soon became second nature.
How to Use a Lash Serum and Mascara Together
1- Apply the Lash Serum First
You should always apply the lash serum before mascara. This is because you want to give the lash serum time to dry and be fully absorbed before applying mascara.
Never apply your mascara BEFORE your lash serum!
This sequence would be a recipe for disaster because the wet mascara would cause the lash serum to run.
And we don’t want that!
2- Watch for Oil-Based Lash Growth Serums
Oil-based lash serums usually come from organic and indie beauty brands. And as you can imagine, wearing mascara over an oil-based product of any kind will ensure that mascara doesn’t hold.
Oil and water don’t mix!
So, if you want to use an oil-based lash serum, it is best to apply it at night before bed. This way, you can apply your mascara in the morning safely.
Having said that, even if you’ve applied the serum the night before, I would still recommend cleaning the lashes with a gentle cleanser before applying makeup.
3- Let the Lash Serum Dry
This is probably the most important rule when using a lash serum with mascara.
After applying the lash serum, you should wait at least 5 minutes before applying mascara. This will give the lash serum time to work its magic and prep your lashes for mascara.
So be patient and give your lash serum time to work its magic before reaching for the mascara.
Should I Try a Lash Serum Infused Mascara?
Did you know that some marketing geniuses have come up with lash serums-infused mascaras?
Yes, they exist and they are actually pretty good!
You are spending time in the morning applying the two products separately, so why not kill two birds with one stone and save some time?
So what is a lash serum-infused mascara anyways?
As the name suggests, it’s essentially the combination of the two products into one. Your mascara is infused with eyelash growth ingredients that will help you achieve longer and fuller lashes over time.
The main benefit of using a lash serum-infused mascara is that you don’t have to worry about the order of application.
You can apply it just like any other mascara and you’re good to go!
I personally love the idea of a lash serum-infused mascara and I think it’s a great way to get the benefits of both products without having to worry about the order of application. Since I already find my growth serum totally worth it, I might give this a try. But I want to research more about it first.
