If you’re already using a lash serum, you might have been considering trying to enhance your results by applying it twice a day. It seems logical at first since more products should = better results, right? Unfortunately, it’s not quite that simple and sometimes more is not better.
In this article, I’ll cover how often should you apply lash serum according to the most popular brands and why you should stick to the once-a-day rule.
Let’s get started!
How Often Should You Use Eyelash Serum?
You should be using eyelash serum just once a day, preferably before bedtime. Applying a lash serum more frequently doesn’t improve results but does increase the risk of irritation and side effects.
I wanted to know what the most popular eyelash growth serum brands had to say about how often their product should be used, so I did some research.
Here’s what I found:
- GrandeLASH: Once a day
- R + F Lash Boost: Once a day
- RevitaLash: Once a day
- neuLAS: Once a day
- RapidLash: Once a day
- Babe Lash: Once a day. Beginners every 2-3 days.
- LASHFOOD Serum: Once a day
- Adoreeye lash serum: Once or twice a day
- Lash Luxury: Once a day
- Uklash Serum: Once a day
- Vegamour GRO lash serum: Once or twice a day
Truth be told, I was a little surprised to see the results. I didn’t expect any brand to recommend using their product more than once a day, but here Adoreeye and Vegamour are.
Perhaps that’s something I could dig deeper into and contact these brands directly to know more about their recommendation.
I also found the recommendation from Babe Lash quite interesting. And it makes sense.
If you are a beginner and just getting started with a lash-enhancing product, it could be more prudent to start using it two to three times a week and then gradually increase the frequency as your lashes get used to the product.
Why You Shouldn’t Use a Lash Serum Twice a Day
Using a lash serum more than once a day can actually cause more harm than good and actually hinder the results you’re hoping to achieve.
There are 3 main reasons why you should stick to the once-a-day rule when it comes to lash serums.
#1 It Can Irritate Your Eyes
Eyelash serums typically contain active ingredients that stimulate lash growth. Those same ingredients can also cause irritation, redness, and dryness when used too often.
These products were tested for safety and effectiveness when used as directed, which is typically once a day. Using them more often can increase your risk of developing an allergic reaction or other side effects.
#2 It Won’t Make It More Effective
If something works, doubling it should make it work even better, right?
I get it, that logic makes sense.
But when it comes to lash serums, more is not better. In fact, some brands clearly state on their website that their lash serum should not be used more than once a day because it won’t make your eyelashes grow any longer or thicker.
So why expose yourself to potential side effects if you don’t have to?
#3 Not Convenient
Ideally, you should be using eyelash serum before bedtime. This is because lash serum needs time (at least five minutes) to sink into your lashes, so it makes sense to apply it as the last step in your nighttime skincare routine.
So what happens if you want to apply a second coat in the morning for example?
Not only do you have to wait for the lash serum to sink in, but applying mascara too quickly afterward can potentially interrupt the lash serum’s effectiveness.
With lash serums averaging between $20 and $100, you want to make sure your application works, and that you’re not letting any product go to waste. Personally, I use my lash serum once at night to achieve optimal results.
Just remember that consistency is key! If you want to see results from using a lash serum, you need to commit to using it once a day, every day.
What Happens if You Use Eyelash Serum Twice a Day?
Using a lash serum twice a day typically won’t cause any major problems, so don’t panic if you’ve accidentally applied lash serum twice.
However, you should generally avoid applying eyelash serum twice a day. Lash serum can get into the eyes and cause irritation, and the likelihood of this happening increases with multiple applications.
Instead of applying lash serum several times a day, the best way to get results is by being consistent with your daily applications. This means not skipping days, and applying your lash serum every day at an optimal time. As I said, I find that applying before bedtime is the most effective way to ensure your lash serum has the time to sink in and work its magic.
If you’re consistent, you’ll start to see results typically after 4-8 weeks of lash serum application, depending on the brand you’re using.
The Bottom Line
commended frequency of use. Some lash serums will instruct you to strictly use one application per day, while others are more liberal.
In general, it’s best to apply the lash serum once a day, at night, as the last step in your skincare routine. This gives the lash serum time to sink in and work its magic while you sleep.
