If you’ve been religiously using your eyelash growth serum and starting to see results, you might be wondering – are these results going to be permanent?
I’ve been getting this question a lot lately so I wanted to clear things up.
There are ways to maintain and prolong the results of your lash growth serum. How?
Let’s take a look!
Is Lash Serum Permanent?
Unfortunately, no, eyelash growth serums won’t give you permanent results. Lash growth serums only stimulate the existing lashes with active ingredients, creating temporary enhanced growth and thickness. But once you stop using the serum, your lashes are going to return to their normal length.
Lash serums are just like any other beauty product. If you stop using them, you’re going to stop seeing results.
This is even more relevant when it comes to lash products, as all the hair on your body (including your eyelashes!) sheds regularly.
Here’s why eyelash growth serums aren’t permanent:
- Your lashes fall out and regrow all the time, meaning it’s impossible to create permanent results without regular maintenance. Did you know that you can lose 2-5 lashes a day on average or 20% of your lashes every fortnight?
- Lash serums use active ingredients to enhance lash growth. Once you stop applying the active ingredients to the lashes, they will return to their normal length and growth rate.
- You need to give your lashes (and your eyes!) a break from lash serums (not all – it depends on which one you use) every once in a while.
But don’t worry – your eyelashes aren’t going to all suddenly fall off or shed as soon as you stop using your lash growth serum. Your lashes will simply return to their normal thickness and length.
What Happens When You Stop Using Eyelash Growth Serum?
If you’ve been using an eyelash growth serum and you decide to stop, your lashes are going to return to their normal length.
However, this doesn’t mean that your lashes are going to suddenly fall out or shed. Your lashes will simply return to their normal thickness and length.
It’s important to note that you shouldn’t stop using your lash serum abruptly. Instead, you should slowly wean off of it so that your lashes can adjust.
Why You Shouldn’t Overuse Lash Growth Serum
While you can still incorporate your eyelash growth serum into your beauty routine, you shouldn’t keep apply it more often than the manufacturer’s instructions. This is because you’re more likely to experience some unpleasant side effects if you do.
Overuse of lash growth serums can cause a number of unwanted side effects, including the following:
- Bumps on the eyelids
- Eye irritation
- Redness
- Eye infections
- Hyperpigmentation of the eyelid
Some studies even show that exposure to a key ingredient in many lash serums (prostaglandin analogs) can actually lead to fat loss around the eye area.1 This can give the eyes a sunken appearance, which isn’t always reversible. We want to enhance our eyes when we use a lash growth serum, not create new problems!
Needless to say that overusing your serum increases your chances of having a negative outcome.
How to Maintain Results From Lash Growth Serum
With all that being said, you still want long-term, permanent results for your lashes, right?
If you want to maintain permanent results from your lash growth serum, you can do so safely by simply reducing the frequency of your applications after 12 weeks.
Instead of applying your lash growth serum every day, apply it 1-2 times every week. This will help maintain permanent results without overwhelming the delicate eye area.
You can also enlist the help of natural home remedies such as coconut oil, which is scientifically proven to prevent lash breakage and can even help stimulate lash growth.2
In between serum applications, you can apply coconut oil to the lashes, helping condition them while promoting natural growth and thickness.
FAQs
Are Latisse results permanent?
Latisse is the only FDA-approved eyelash growth serum, so it’s natural to think that you’re getting permanent results. Unfortunately, even Latisse results are temporary. Once you stop using Latisse, your lashes will return to their usual length and thickness.
What lash treatment offers permanent results?
No lash treatments are ever permanent, as your lashes shed and regrow all the time. Lash lifts, lash tints, and lash extensions can all last up to 6 weeks.
How long should you use eyelash serum?
You should always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when it comes to applying lash growth serum. Most lash serums will advise you to use the product for around 2-3 months in order to see results. After completing the given instruction period, you should switch to 1-2 applications per week to maintain your results.
The Bottom Line
Eyelash growth serums don’t offer permanent results since your eyelashes shed and regrow all the time.
If you want to prolong your results, regular maintenance is key. With a combination of bi-weekly lash serum applications and some natural lash remedies like coconut oil, you can enjoy thick, fluttery lashes all year round.
